Clare’s Mix

Clare's Mix

I made a music mix for Poppy when I was pregnant with her, and she still listens to it nearly every day. I think it’s never too early for good music, and I love telling my kids that they have special songs picked out just for them. Songs all about their unique personalities and my love for them. Because who doesn’t need to feel like David Bowie is singing only for her every once and a while?

Likey, likey

We took a family trip to the library last night to stock up on some more Dr. Quinn, and to find some new tunes for the baby. Have I mentioned that Poppy loves music? The second she hears anything – be it Bach’s cello suites or the rinky dink song that her talking purse plays – she starts dancing. I’ll have to get a video of her one and only move, The Sitting Humper. It’s sort of like when an excited dog sees another excited dog, or a firehydrant, or my husband’s leg. Only with Poppy, her “move” directly correlates with radical tunes. I love watching her listen to music. Her face just lights up at the sound of a melody and you can’t stop her from moving, no matter where we are. She loves a good dance party right in the middle of the grocery store.

Anyway, we picked up Kimya Dawson’s Alphabutt album last night, and so far we’ve listened to it three times through. Poppy’s favorite song? The Alphabutt song of course!

I also picked up The Johnny Cash Children’s Album, Lullaby Renditions of Radiohead and U2, Happy Days: A Tribute to Laura Ingalls Wilder, Janis Joplin’s Pearl album, and Elton John’s Number Ones. That last one might be more for me than her, but whatever. Mama’s got to like it too.
