Weekend Moment:: A parade

We had a wonderful weekend with family and friends giving thanks, making first memories with Poppy, eating good food, looking at old pictures, listening to a fart application on the iPhone, playing games with new friends, and getting some much needed work done on our new house. I raked our front yard on Saturday! OUR yard. Which I raked. I’ve never even used a rake before, people.

There are so many special moments I would like to share for today’s Weekend Moment, but honestly, the one I will remember forever and always is waking up on Thanksgiving day to watch the Macy’s parade with my own little family. Just the three of us, snuggling up together on the couch on Thanksgiving morning to watch the floats and marching bands. Poppy soaked it all in and especially loved watching the Rockettes perform. This girl has got some aspirations.

Weekend Moment:: Poppy’s door

Door

I sat outside Poppy’s door tonight and listened while Jacob rocked her little body to sleep and sang sweetly to her…

There is a castle on a cloud
I like to go there in my sleep
Aren“t any floors for me to sweep
Not in my castle on a cloud

I love this sound more than I can express. But I guess if I had to explain it, it would go something like this – colorful rainbows wrapped in teddy bear hugs with oodles of chocolate syrup pouring from mountains of candy with newborn babies and kittens running naked through fields of Enya CDs.

Weekend Moment :: The Love Affair Begins

Watching figure skating

On the weekends, Poppy’s high chair gets moved into the living room where she gets to eat all of her meals cartoon-side. Today while having an afternoon snack, she caught a glimpse of figure skating on television and was completely mesmorized. Readers, behold your next Nancy Kerrigan. Well, with her build, it’s more like Oksana Baiul. Minus the DUI.

Weekend Moment :: Wedding Lights

Gole wedding

This is my sister Amy during the wedding reception of good friends on Saturday. Isn’t she beautiful? She can really tear it up on the dance floor too.

Despite the heart-attacking stress of dressing and grooming a family of three and getting out the door looking dapper and dolled-up, I absolutely loved being guests of Steve and Liz at their wedding this weekend. It is so wonderful to watch two friends commit to a lifetime of unreserved love to each other. Mmmm. I just love it.

Happy Monday!

Excuse the vertical orientation of this video. Just look at how amazing this little girl and her Papa are…

Weekend Moment:: Baby Snuggles

Weekend Moment:: Snuggles

I’m starting to see a pattern in our weekend moments. There’s always that baby! And we’re always snuggling her! Life is so good.

Poppy and I were little theater-widow shut-ins this weekend, again. You have heard about the plight of theater widows, right? A topic close to my heart that I have written about here and here. Jacob is currently doing a run of a musical review this month and consequently, Poppy and I have had many hours cooped up in the house each weekend to snuggle each other and see who can burp the loudest.

Happy Monday!

If I relived this moment a hundred times, I could die completely happy.

The fleeting moments of summer

This week’s It Begins With a Colour challenge is to seek out the fleeting moments of summer, to find and treasure and hold on to that last little bit of summer air before Fall brings her chill. Combined with a Weekend Moment, I present to you my fleeting summer weekend moment:

Poppy in the morning sun

This is Poppy with her Uncle Shawn, my youngest brother. This photo was taken while they were sitting on a blanket in the morning dew on one of the first days of our vacation. Camping is the highlight of summer fun for me, and yet her tiny little sweatshirt merrily indicates the stealthy approach of fall.

Our vacation was lovely, and far too short. A week in the mountains, drenched in the fragrance of campfire, could last forever and ever in my book. Poppy was a real trooper and A+ camper. She slept well at night, ate her food despite it being cold and soggy all the time, and loved being outdoors. She soaked in the crisp mountain air every day like it was the best thing ever, and trooped along trails with us like she was Marty-Freaking-Stouffer.

We visited a petting zoo on Sunday which was a real hoot. Yes, I said REAL HOOT.

You see, back when we got our kitten, we showed Poppy how to call Penny over by patting her hand on her knee and saying “Come here, Penny.” Poppy caught on to this pretty quickly and has since start calling Penny over by banging on her leg and making a sweet, high-pitched noise that somewhat resembles my irritating I’ll-Raise-You-One-Octive-While-Talking-To-Cute-Things voice. When we got to the petting zoo this weekend, Poppy immediately started patting her leg and frantically summoning all the animals from their cages. I do believe the pot-bellied pigs took one look at my Little Bacon Bit and said “Hell with that, kid. Let me eat that handful of corn you got there.” Either way, MAJOR HOOT.

I’m glad to be back home and I feel ready for a new season. Fall in Cleveland is the best. We might have to endure everlasting winters and humid summers, but I can safely say that I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else during these crisp autumn mornings than right here.

Weekend Moment

My cousin David is getting married to an awesome girl named Jessica this coming weekend. Last night, we celebrated her bachelorette party at my aunt’s house on the lake. It was my first overnight away from Poppy. My heart was aching for her chubby arms and her soft head all evening, but I was still somehow able to have a few several drinks and celebrate into the wee hours of the morning. Fine, yes. Even though I was missing my baby, I still may have managed to dance and sing along to ABBA with a bubblegum martini in hand.

I wish I could have captured Poppy’s “welcome home Mommy” smile on film, because it was super, super awesome too.
